For our directed storytelling research, we aimed to understand what people think and feel about goodbyes. Open-ended questions encouraged participants to share freely, while closed questions provided prompts if needed.
We focused on three key areas: actions, environment, and emotions. This approach helped us collect specific data that could be analyzed and compared later.
Most strangers gave short and measured answers, without much detail. Having more questions helped us engage with them more effectively. However, participants who knew some of us beforehand provided long, detailed, and emotional responses.
This made us realize that —
for a topic as sensitive, emotional, and personal as "goodbyes," trust and familiarity are crucial for people to open up and share personal details.
Hence, we decided to split into pairs and conduct the directed storytelling within our team. Interestingly, this also gave us the opportunity to know each other better and have meaningful conversations.
We sorted the responses into three main groups: insights, questions, and facts. We noticed several recurring themes that appeared across the groups. Building on these themes, we brainstormed several project ideas that aligned with the insights we gathered. This process allowed us to develop creative and well-informed directions based on the data we collected.

Storyboarding For Dystopian Goodbye
We roleplayed in a dystopian world, recording our reactions in different situations. However, we found the exercise too complex and lacking a clear focus, especially when it came to a unique goodbye. So, we decided to rethink our approach.
