What happens to the climate in extreme conditions?

They amplify temperature variations, increasing the frequency and severity of heatwaves as global temperatures rise. Melting ice caps release cold water, threatening the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) with collapse. This could cause catastrophic cooling, destabilize temperature zones, and trigger new weather patterns. While the planet warms overall, these disruptions lead to unpredictable extremes, from intense heat waves to severe cold snaps, intensifying the climate crisis.

Ideating the Experience

Inspired by the emotion of restlessness, we planned and discussed creating a wearable to address extreme temperature conditions. The goal was to help people cope with temperature restlessness. We discussed using heat blankets as the primary material. These aluminium foil blankets have been widely used as emergency tools to prevent hypothermia, making them a practical and effective choice for our design.

Next, we used the research method called ‘Bodystorming’ to explore how the material works in different environments and how people interact with it. Since the material is fragile, we were initially concerned about its feasibility and its ability to provide warmth in cold conditions.

We designed a versatile wearable to address temperature restlessness. As the climate changes, we’ll need new types of clothing and layers. These might be very different from what we wear now and could feel much less comfortable. This raises an essential question: how can fashion balance practicality with wearability in an era of environmental change?

The wearable combines the concept of Yin and Yang, which represents balance (Jaeger, S., 2012), and the traditional Asian conical hat called 'sugegasa', used for cooling & protection from the elements (Rei, 2021; Tottori Prefectural Government, n.d). We sketched out a wearable suit-like design inspired by these ideas.

The heat blanket material was too fragile, requiring more expertise and time. An alternative material or better planning could have helped.
