Overview

Overview

Google Health is the newer version of Fitbit, with an AI-powered personal health coach at its centre, using data from wearables and fitness apps to give users tailored guidance across fitness, sleep, and overall wellbeing.

When I joined, nutrition wasn't part of this. The existing food logging feature in Fitbit's older version was outdated, a standalone tool that tracked calories and nothing else. It wasn't connected to the AI coach, wasn't connected to other health signals, and didn't give users any personalized coaching based on the tracked data.

My first goal was to close the gap, redesigning the existing Fitbit nutrition experience to fit within Google Health's new ecosystem and Material 3 Expressive design system. This meant rethinking how nutrition data is logged, tracked, and visualised across different time scales. I also iterated on new ways of visualising data.

This part was more open-ended, exploring how nutrition could become one of the primary signals in the product rather than just an internal metric. I looked at how the AI coach could surface contextual, actionable insights at different moments in the day, how nutrition connects to fitness and sleep data, and what third-party integrations could unlock for users with more complex health goals.

The opportunity was twofold: closing the food tracking and visualization gap between Fitbit and the new Google Health app using an updated design system, while exploring a north-star vision to help users easily understand nutrition signals and build healthier lifestyles.

This phase was about mapping how nutrition connects to other health domains, studying existing research, understanding users, and doing a qualitative competitor analysis, all to answer one question: what role could an AI health coach realistically play in making healthy nutrition habits stick?

To truly help users achieve their goals, it is key to personalize nutrition based on their needs and habits. Consistent nudges in the right direction can make a big difference.

Nutrition is not just about food and eating habits. It has effects on fitness, sleep, wellbeing, cycle health, almost all other areas of one's health. Hence looking at nutrition signals that are impacting other areas of health becomes key in achieving our goal of a holistic health coach.

Working with an AI model means having access to almost unlimited data — which puts more responsibility on the designer, not less. The hardest design question wasn't what the AI could say, but what it should. I spent a lot of time making sure every insight was actionable — not a summary of what users already knew, but a small nudge that fit their life as it actually is. If users don't get something meaningful back from their data, they stop logging it. The feedback loop only works if the insight is worth returning for.

I started exploring the north star before I'd touched the MVP, which felt like the wrong order. But understanding the full extent of what this product could become gave me a much clearer sense of what it needed to be right now.
