Content Analysis

We started the week by learning a new qualitative research method called content analysis. It examines the occurrence and relationships between concepts by classifying, describing, and connecting data. We used this method to analyze how people identify 'pink out of place' in their surroundings.

Between the two ideas, we felt more strongly about the use of pink in horror movies.

Our film analysis and research consistently showed that the color pink can evoke unsettling and creepy emotions in horror movies because it feels out of place.

Like Midsommer's relentless sun, pink works in horror because of its saccharine associations. It’s the last thing we’d expect, and it’s terrifying to have our safe havens invaded (McPhee, 2023).

This led us to focus on —

‘The duality of pink in storytelling and the analysis of when pink is out of place in horror stories.’

Creating The Experience

Our final experience involved designing a slide box inspired by old projector slides, which had to be manually changed. It was a multi-layered process, blending physical and digital elements, and we thoroughly enjoyed creating it

The aim was to demonstrate how pink, typically seen as an innocent and sweet color, can feel unsettling and out of place in certain shades & contexts, creating a creepy environment.
